Addition of CAN-bus and ATEX compliance adaptations

Customer request: A rugged computer for tank truck operations

The customer needed a rugged computer to serve as the main Human Machine Interface (HMI) for controlling fueling and refueling of a tank truck. The solution needed to be able to achieve ATEX Zone 1 and 2 certification.

Solution: A rugged computer with integrated vehicle interface

The solution was one of JLT’s standard 12-inch rugged vehicle-mount terminals (VMT’s), featuring a custom-made integrated vehicle interface to connect directly to the truck.

Customizations to meet certification and functional needs

To meet the customer’s specific requirements, we made the following adaptations:

  • Added the customer’s preferred CAN-bus interface by replacing the standard serial port with an integrated USB-CAN module.
  • Removed the internal radio and battery to enable the system to qualify for ATEX certification.
  • Developed a custom BIOS and prepared a tailored image to simplify and streamline deployment.

Customer benefits: certification-ready and fully integrated solution

The right interface for their software (without having to change anything) and the adoptions necessary to make an Atex certification possible as well as quicker deployment with a turnkey solution.
