JLT Mobile Computers Selected to Reduce CO2 Emissions from Road Transports

JLT Mobile Computers, developer of mobile computers for tough environments, announced today that the company's rugged vehicle computer VERSO has been selected as the exclusive computer platform for the Volvo lumber trucks used in the project ETTdemo. JLT joins the ETTdemo project, which is collaboration between the Swedish vehicle, forestry, and transport industries and authorities, with the goal of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from road transports. The VERSO computer from JLT was selected because it meets the stringent requirements of reliability and performance.

The purpose of the ETTdemo project is to fulfill Sweden's goal of greatly reducing CO2 emissions from road transports as well as the forestry industry's goal to reduce fuel consumption for lumber transport. The number of shipments is increasing while the expansion of infrastructure is slow and expensive. The goal is to use the existing infrastructure more efficiently. CO2 emissions are reduced by increasing the amount of lumber carried by one vehicle, with no negative impact in terms of road wear or traffic safety.

JLT's computers are used to inform and instruct the driver about optimal handling of the heavy vehicle. The driver can also use the computer for order management, transport and route planning, map data, safety functions, vehicle and driver data, run time reporting, eco driving, and other functions that increase revenue and decrease operational expenses.

"We have used the rugged vehicle computers from JLT for field tests in our heavy lumber trucks for some time, in order to develop functions such as improved traction and visualization of axle loads, which are critical for increased road safety and handling of our vehicles," said Lena Larsson, project manager at Volvo. "The computers have worked very well and we are happy to include JLT as the IT partner in the project."

A JLT computer is part of a demonstration of a 74-ton Volvo lumber truck on June 5 through 8, at Elmia Wood in Sweden, the world's largest international forestry conference. The demonstration will be held in the booth of the ETTdemo project team, Skogforsk (the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden) and Bennesveds Åkeri (#795).
